Around 43 million homes in Germany need to be renovated in order to achieve the German government's climate protection targets. According to experts, many unrenovated properties consume twice as much energy as new buildings. However, "modernization" is not just about energy-efficient refurbishment. Many owners also want to renovate their property in other ways.

1. the right timetable

A core refurbishment is a logistical challenge. This is why many owners prefer to modernize their property piece by piece. The right sequence of measures is important in order to achieve the best possible refurbishment results. Experts therefore advise having an individual renovation roadmap drawn up by a specialist.

2. apply for funding

State subsidies are available for energy-efficient refurbishment. The lower the energy consumption of the property after the renovation, the higher the subsidy. Applications can be submitted to the BAFA or KfW be provided. It is important to do this before you commission the tradesmen. In addition, very low-interest loans of up to a maximum of 150,000 euros per residential unit can be applied for from the KfW Bank for a planned core renovation. State repayment subsidies can also be granted.

3. find a craftsman

The current shortage of skilled workers is making it difficult to find tradespeople. The waiting time for an appointment can currently take up to nine weeks. Experts therefore recommend starting the search for suitable tradespeople at an early stage. At the local chambers of crafts or on www.co2online.de building owners can find companies that are familiar with energy-efficient refurbishment.

4th construction phase

Refurbishment is always carried out from the outside in. First the façade, then the heating - for example. In the case of extensive refurbishment measures, construction supervision should be consulted. This can also be funded by KfW. Experts also recommend obtaining delivery bills and building specifications from the tradesmen after the refurbishment. These documents play a role in the warranty. Finally, an energy consultant must confirm the energy efficiency achieved so that the funding applied for can be paid out.
