The decision has been made: your relative needs intensive care and support. Of course you only want the best for your beloved relative. A place where he or she feels comfortable and at home. That's why you should take enough time and inform yourself well. The best way to do this is to proceed step by step.

At the beginning of your considerations is the question: In which region does the person in need of care want to live in the future? Do they prefer a facility in their current living environment or do they want to move close to relatives who may live somewhere completely different? Do they prefer an urban environment or a residential area in the countryside?

Databases facilitate the home search

With the help of various databases on the Internet (e.g. Heimverzeichnis.de), you can then begin your search in the selected region. Many of these directories make the search easier with filters for prices or care specialties. Of course, you should keep an eye on your financing options and also consider what type of care and support is important for your relative. If you need help at short notice, temporary short-term care is recommended. Many care homes offer places for this.

Once you have made a pre-selection, you will find further helpful information on the care homes' websites. Or you can have brochures sent to you. Also read between the lines: Is the facility's website friendly and informative or rather impersonal and not very transparent? Most care facilities also advertise with the care ratings awarded by the Medical Service of the Health Insurance Funds (MDK). However, these have so far only been of limited use, as the MDK only checks the care documentation and not the practical care provided on a day-to-day basis.

A new inspection system improves home assessment

The result was consistently good to very good grades, which were therefore not very meaningful. A new inspection system, which has been in use since fall 2019, is intended to improve this. Among other things, a random sample of nine residents are personally interviewed about their life in the facility. "In addition, the expert discussion with the responsible nursing staff is an essential part of the new inspection procedure," says Dr. Monika Kücking, Head of the Health Department of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds.

There is also a new system for measuring quality and presenting the results. People seeking advice can compare different facilities online according to criteria that are important to them. Another good indicator of quality in care is the so-called "green tick". Ideally, your research will result in a preselection of around three homes.
