The Baukindergeld is a state subsidy for families with children who purchase residential property - regardless of whether they are building a new home or buying an existing property. The subsidy was previously due to expire at the end of 2020. It has now been extended by 3 months. This means that in order to be able to apply for Baukindergeld, you must have received planning permission, started a building project or concluded a purchase contract by this deadline. The application must be submitted to KfW.

Families or single parents with children who start building a house or buy a detached house or condominium in the first three months of this year can rejoice. They can still benefit from the child building allowance. This is a subsidy of 12,000 euros per child (1,200 euros per year, spread over 10 years), which is granted if your household income does not exceed a certain amount. With two children, the upper income limit is 105,000 euros. Furthermore, the new home must be your only residential property in order to be eligible for the Baukindergeld.

When, where and how is the application submitted?

You can apply for the building subsidy online via the KfW grant portal and only after you have moved into your new home. However, if you moved into your new home between 01.01. and 21.01.2021, KfW asks that you only submit your application from 22.01. due to the pandemic. You have six months from the date on your registration certificate to apply. In principle, you can still apply until 31.12.2023.

What proof do I need for the application?

First, you must prove your identity online via video identification or with Postident at a Deutsche Post branch. You will also need the following documents to apply for a 2021 Baukindergeld:

  • the 2018 and 2019 tax returns
  • the registration confirmation showing that all household members are registered in your new property
  • the extract from the land register in which you are registered as owner or co-owner

The supporting documents must be uploaded no later than 3 months after the application is submitted.

How is the Baukindergeld paid out?

Once your application for the building allowance has been approved, you will receive an annual payment of 1,200 euros per child for 10 years, which will be transferred to your account. However, this only applies as long as you live in your new home. If you move out and sell or rent out your property, you will no longer meet the eligibility criteria.
